Parts of speech

What is parts of speech?

The parts of speech are all the words in a sentece, divided in diferents parts. There are 8 kinds or types according to their function and meaning.
Here we can see the 8 parts of speech:

  1. NOUN
  2. PRONOUN
  3. ADJECTIVE
  4. VERB
  5. ADVERB
  6. PREPOSITION
  7. CONJUNCTION
  8. INTERJECTION
In a sentence we can use few or many words. 
  • Medium 1 word: Do
  • 2 words in a sentence: Do it
  • 3 words in a sentence: You do it
  • more than 3 words in a sentence: Mr. Candray was a good vice principal who lives in Dhaka and teaches the students English very quickly. Oh! Last year he died.
According to the previous sentence we have:

Mr. Candray= NOUN
good= ADJECTIVE
in= PREPOSITION
and= CONJUNCTION
teaches= VERB

But, what does each part of speech consist of?

NOUN: a noun is a word used to name a person, animal,place, thing and abstract idea.

Proper noun: Daniel, Saturn, Frida, Jacke.
Common noun: bed, phone, pencil.
Abstract noun: love, vanity, lucky, faith.
Collective noun: class, team, army, group




PRONOUN: a word used in the place of one or more nouns.

Demostrative pronoun: this, these, that, those
Interrogative pronoun: who, whom, whose, what, which, where, when
Reflexive pronoun: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves



ADJECTIVE: a word used to modify or describe a noun or pronoun.

VERB:  a word used to express action or state of being.

Infinitive verbs: wake up, brush, go, check, work, chat, play, eat, drink, clean, sleep, cook, call
Past verbs: woke up, brushed, went, called, slept, cooked, worked
Past participle:  woken up, gone, done,driven, drunk, made, 



ADVERB: a word used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

Frequency adverbs
Adverb of manner: slowly, carefully, deeple, silently, kindly
Adverb of place: here, there, out, everywhere, up
Adverb of time: dayly, now, yesterday, today, ago, always
Adverb of order: second, twice, last, once
Adverb of degree: too, very, rather
Interrogative adverb: where, when, why
Frequency adverb: never, rarely, sometimes, often, usually, always


PREPOSITION: is a word used to show the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence.

INTERJECTION: a word used as an exclamation that can stand alone. In another way, we can say that an interjection is a word that expresses sudden feelings or emotion (😏😊😄😢😧).

Hateable emotions:Fie! Fie!, Shame!, Tush!, Pooh!
Fear:Hush!, Silence!, Oops!
Amusement:Ha! Ha!, Yei!
Sorrows:Alas!, Ah!, Oh!, Wow!

Understanding the different parts of speech is important in understandig ho words can and should be joined together to make sentences that are both grammatically correct and readable.
